The string/orchestral program at SFA is one of the
most important ingredients in the School of Music, beginning with the
performing ensembles. The
Orchestra
of the Pines is a regional symphony orchestra that performs a full
season of works from the standard literature, both at SFA and in neighboring
East Texas communities. The newly organized
SFA
Chamber Orchestra focuses on smaller chamber ensemble and string
works from the Baroque to the present. Both ensembles provide opportunities
for student solo performing.
In addition to a full range of string pedagogy classes
offered for teacher education, private lessons with expert faculty,
numerous small ensembles, a full orchestra, and a chamber orchestra,
the orchestra program offers an annual Concerto Competition which affords students a professional performance
opportunity with the Orchestra of the Pines or the SFA Chamber Orchestra.
Additional opportunities exist for
chamber music experiences as well as involvement by advanced players
in several regional orchestras such as the East
Texas Symphony in Tyler, as well as the Longview, Marshall,
and Shreveport (LA)
symphony orchestras.
Student string recitals featuring
solo and chamber music performances are presented every semester. Solo
instrumental training, orchestral techniques and repertoire, as well
as chamber music study and coaching are guided by a highly skilled
faculty.
String scholarships are available
to music majors and nonmajors alike through competitive auditions.
