Scholarships / Financial Aid

Several forms of financial aid are available to students. This aid may be received in the form of a direct scholarship, grant, loan, college work-study job, or a combination of these programs. In addition to the music scholarships listed on this page, students are encouraged to review additional scholarships offered through the university for which they may well qualify. Some scholarships are based on class rank or transferring college GPA. Most applications for university scholarships must be filed with the Office of Student Financial Assistance no later than February 1.

Music Scholarships
Scholarships in band, orchestra, choir and voice, and keyboard instruments are available by audition. Scholarship auditions are held in the Tom & Peggy Wright Music Building on the SFA campus at several scheduled times during the spring semester. In the event of conflicts, special audition times may be arranged.

Awards:
Scholarship awards up to $10,000 in each area:

Choir/Voice
Keyboard
Strings
Winds/Percussion

Awards are divided over four years (eight semesters).

Young Artists Scholarship Auditions
February 2, 2008 - Keyboard only
February 29 - March 1, 2008

Eligibility:
The SFA Young Artist Scholarship Auditions are open to any student entering Stephen F. Austin State University as a freshman music major in the Fall of 2008. Students must meet the entrance requirements of the University, must not have accepted a scholarship from another university, and must have a minimum high school grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalency. Prizes are awarded as talent warrants.

Music Activity Scholarship Auditions

Music activity scholarships are available to qualified students based on ability and may be open to some talented non-majors based on the specific needs of the SFA band, choir, or orchestra.

Eligibility:
Band, Choir, Keyboard, and Orchestra scholarship are available to qualified students. Awards are based on the musical abilities of the applicants. Scholarships are granted primarily to music majors, although some exceptions are made for some specific band or orchestral instruments.

Financial Aid
Programs offered by the Office of Student Financial Assistance include Federal perkins Loan, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Stafford and parent Loans, Texas grants, State Scholarship for Ethnic Recruitment, Texas Public Educational Program, Federal Family Education Loan Program, short-term emergency loans, and University scholarships.

Applications for each academic year are made available in the Office of Student Financial Assistance in January preceding the application period. The priority date for applications for the academic year is April 1. These applications should be completed in a timely manner. Most programs require the student to demonstrate financial need, be in good academic standing, and maintain satisfactory progress. The Financial Aid Office is located on the first floor of the Austin Building.
