Recent Press Releases: SFA Composition Student Receives Top Award The newly revised composition area offers an exciting and diverse curriculum for undergraduate and graduate students in the field. Covering a broad spectrum of styles, genres, and ensembles, this program is designed to provide an environment that stimulates creativity and exploration, while preparing each student for the demands of a career in any field of composition. In addition to private composition lessons, courses are offered in film scoring, composition software, orchestration, counterpoint, and form. Weekly studio classes provide composition students at all levels an opportunity to interact with each other, as well as providing a forum for guest speakers, reading sessions, panel discussions, and field trips. Composition students have access to the MIDI/Music Technology Lab and the composition lab in the music building, both of which are equipped with the latest music production hardware and software. Opportunities for having student works read and performed abound. SFA has excellent student and faculty performers, as well as performing ensembles in a wide variety of areas. New works are frequently performed on recitals and convocations, as well as on concerts of new works put on each semester by the composition area. Graduate students can take courses in composition, orchestration, and stylistic analysis. Advanced projects often include collaborative projects with the areas of theatre, dance, film, or interactive media. SFA composition students are winning awards, getting pieces published, having works performed on conferences, and being hired to score films. To apply, please contact Dr. Lias at slias@sfasu.edu for more details. Decisions for fall admission are made on or around March 1 each year. Spring and summer admission is done on a case-by-case basis contingent upon available space. Approximately two applicants are accepted each year, and there is a great deal of competition for these spots. Applicants are evaluated based on evidence of creativity, quality and variety of works already composed, academic achievement, and (whenever possible) persoanl interview. For more information about the composition program, read the Survival Guide for Composition Majors* and this promotional flier.*
