Band, Winds & Percussion

Band
Bands at SFA have a nationally recognized reputation for excellence. The Wind Ensemble, the premier concert band in the school, has performed regularly for convention-clinics of the Texas Music Educators Association and the College Band Directors National Association. The Wind Ensemble commissions new works from outstanding composers each year. Concerts by the Wind Ensemble often feature nationally known guest conductors and soloists.

Lumberjack Marching BandThe 240-member Lumberjack Marching Band is the only band in the state of Texas dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in both the military and corps styles of marching. Each year the marching band performs for all home games, travels to two away games, hosts marching contests and performs for a variety of campus and civic functions.

Other ensembles include the Chamber Winds, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, and the Pep Band. Membership in the SFA bands includes students from most departments within the university.

Spring 2008 Band Audition Information

The summer band camps, begun in 1954, have long been recognized as among the most outstanding music camps in Texas. The camps feature members of the SFA wind and percussion faculty, national band leaders, and approximately 55 other eminent band, wind, percussion, and auxiliary specialists from the public schools of Texas. Each summer, the camps attract approximately 1,500 students to the campus.

Wind / Percussion
The brass, woodwind and percussion areas offer a wide variety of performance opportunities in addition to bands, wind ensembles and orchestra. Chamber groups such as brass and woodwind quintets and saxophone quartet perform regularly in recitals and for special occasions, giving students experience in diverse repertoire. The clarinet choir, trumpet ensemble, and flute choir are also part of the chamber music program.

Dr. Diane Boyd Schultz with Flute StudentThe applied wind and percussion faculty members bring a broad background of teaching, performing and educational experiences to SFA. All presently perform as principal players with symphony orchestras and have extensive band experience. Faculty chamber groups including the Stone Fort Wind Quintet are widely recognized for their excellence. The applied faculty are also in demand as guest clinicians throughout the state, and perform regularly in recital in national and international venues.

Dr. Scott Harris with Percussion StudentThe percussion department focuses on the development and education of the total percussionist. Through a complete and intensive curriculum, percussionists develop skills in all areas of percussion performance including solo keyboard, orchestral excerpts, marching percussion, drum set and jazz vibraphone. In addition to performing regularly in the concert and athletic bands, jazz band and orchestra, students enjoy two large chamber ensembles that perform regularly both on- and off-campus. The SFA Percussion Ensemble performs a wide variety of repertoire from classical transcriptions to modern jazz works and is devoted to developing the highest level of artistic excellence in performance, while the SFA Steel Band is recognized throughout East Texas for its live energy and traditional Latin/Caribbean sound. The percussion studio includes a large rehearsal room, four private practice rooms and a storage facility.
