About the Competition

The SFA Summer Piano Competition kicks off an exciting week of music making at the Stephen F. Austin State University Piano in the Pines Summer Camp for pre-college students. Students who enroll in the piano camp are encouraged to participate in the competition, but it is not required. Conversely, the piano competition is open to all participants regardless if they are attending the week’s piano camp or not.

Complete information about the SFA Piano in the Pines Summer Camp can be found at:

There are two ways to register:

  • Eligibility Requirements (The preceding link only toggles the on-screen display)

Students who are in school through grade 12 (or in the equivalent home school curriculum levels) compete in divisions according to their grade in school for the 2017-2018 academic year:

    Performance levels:
    Grade Division:
    10 - 12 Division I
    7 - 9 Division II

*Competition organizers reserve the right to cancel or combine divisions due to low enrollment. Organizers may also split divisions if there is an extremely high amount of performers registered for it.

  • Repertoire Requirements (The preceding link only toggles the on-screen display)

Participants should prepare to perform two memorized pieces of contrasting style. One piece must be from the Baroque or Classical period (or in a Neo-Baroque or Neo-Classical style). All auditions will be limited to 12 minutes maximum. If performance time for both works exceeds the time limit, the performer will be asked to stop on one or both pieces to keep the competition on schedule. Please indicate the exact timing of the performance on the application form.

An original score of each piece performed must be provided for the judge. Photocopies of music are not acceptable. Measures must be numbered ahead of time.

Participants may choose to perform repertoire more difficult than average for their level; however, they will be held to the same standard of preparation expected of others in that division. A more difficult piece will not win if it is less meticulously prepared than other entries.

  • Fee Information (The preceding link only toggles the on-screen display)

The entry fee is $25 per student. If the student is attending the SFA Piano in the Pines Camp, the entry fee is discounted to $15. The participation fee is non-refundable. Online payment with a credit card is preferred. If paying by check, make check payable to: SFA School of Music.

  • Awards Ceremony (The preceding link only toggles the on-screen display)

Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize for each division. The judge reserves the right to NOT award prizes if they feel an award is not deserved. Each performer will receive a critique sheet from the judge and a ribbon for participation.

In addition to trophies, monetary prizes will be awarded for Division I only:

    • First prize - $200
    • Second Prize - $100
    • Third prize - $50
