Background
DR. THOMAS M. HOUSTON has been a member of the SFA music faculty since
1967. His teaching career began in Hopkins County, Kentucky in 1963.
At SFA, he has taught all of the woodwinds, woodwind methods, elementary
music, music appreciation, music fundamentals, chamber music, flute
choir, graduate courses and conducted the university symphony for
7 years.
Dr. Houston has been active throughout his career
as a clarinet, flute and saxophone performer and adjudicator. As a
woodwind player, he has performed throughout the U.S. He has been a
clinician for Selmer, Buffet and Muramatsu flutes. He has also recorded
22 educational recordings on clarinet and flute. Since 1995, Dr. Houston
has been teaching music fundamentals and music appreciation. His former
woodwind students are successful teachers and performers throughout
the U.S.
Interests, Activities & Plans
Dr. Houston is most interested in keeping big band music alive. He
is continually studying and researching the music of the big band
era. His own big band, The Tom Houston Orchestra, is considered one
of the top big bands in the Ark-La-Tex, having performed throughout
the southwest and the western Caribbean. They have appeared in concert
with "The Artie Shaw Orchestra" directed by Dick Johnson and "The
Glenn Miller Orchestra" directed by Larry O'Brien. Their first
recording "Pipe Dreams" received national airplay.
