Background
DR. STEPHEN LIAS received his B.S. in Music
Education from Messiah College, his Master of Music from Stephen
F. Austin State University, and his D.M.A. in Composition from
Louisiana State University. His teachers have included Dinos Constantinides,
Stephen David Beck, Dan Beatty, and Darrell Holt. Although his
compositional output spans a wide variety of media and styles,
he is most active in the area of theatrical incidental music. Dr.
Lias has composed original music for over thirty professional theatrical
productions since 1989 including the highly successful production
of "I Hate Hamlet" at the Alabama
Shakespeare Festival. He has just completed his ninth year as
Composer in Residence and Music Director at the Texas
Shakespeare Festival.
Dr. Lias' works have been performed in concert and
recital throughout the country by soloists and ensembles including The
Louisiana Sinfonietta and The
NYU New Music Ensemble. In addition to his numerous commissions
and performances, his music has been published by the Sacred Music
Press, Conners Publications,
and Southern
Music Publishing.
Interests, Activities & Plans
He is a member of ASCAP, NACUSA, The
College Music Society, The American
Music Center, and The
Society of Composers, Inc., and is the Founder and Director of The
Center for the Promotion of Contemporary Composers (CPCC), a large
Internet-based service organization for composers. He recently received
his third consecutive ASCAP Standard Award for his work in contemporary
music.
