MAX MORLEY joined the School of Music as trumpet specialist
in 1971 after doctoral study at North Texas State University. His teaching
and performing career began in Odessa, Texas in 1967 directing bands
at Bowie Junior High School and Odessa High School. He served as principal

1967 to 1969.
Dr. Morley was active throughout his career as a trumpet
performer, clinician and adjudicator. He produced ten educational trumpet
recordings. His studio alumni are enjoying success as teachers and
performers throughout the Southwest.
His book, Trumpet Quest,
was published in 2000. The book unites contemporary and traditional practice materials with an approach to practice derived from modern exercise physiology. Morley says, “The TQ exercises are inspired by 35 years of teaching talented students practice materials that were written during the past 150 years - J. B. Arban, Herbert L. Clarke, Earl D. Irons, Max Schlossberg, Ernest Williams, John Haynie, Alexander Petit, and many others. Morley's former students will remember the exercises by the name that they gave them, Chops.” Complete information about Trumpet Quest may be seen at www.maxmorley.com.
Dr. Morley retired from the trumpet studio in 1992 to become director of the Office of Arts Information. His responsibilities included directing the SFA University Series and SFA and International Paper Company Children's Performing Arts Series.
