Recent Faculty Accomplishments


Fred J. Allen

Fred J. Allen served as clinician and conductor for the Southeastern United States Honor Band December 1-3, 2005. The clinic was held at Troy University in Alabama. While at Troy University, Allen also guest conducted the Troy University Symphonic Band, performing his arrangement of "They Led my Lord Away."

Allen served as guest conductor for the Great Ft. Worth Community Band October 17. Under his baton the band performed his arrangement of "Were You There." (Three SFA Alumni perform in the band: Justin Thomas, Chris Atkins and Jennifer Stokes.)

Allen recently served as clinician and conductor for All-Region bands in Temple, Groesbeck, Justin and Nacogdoches.

Scott Harris

 

Scott Harris gave a timpani clinic in November 2005 at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Columbus, OH. The session focused on fundamental teaching and performance techniques and was designed for beginning percussionists as well as public school band directors.

In January 2006 Dr. Harris spent a week in Atlanta, GA and was one of four participants in a five-day timpani masterclass hosted by Mark Yancich, timpanist for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The class was an in-depth study of Western Classical performance techniques and repertoire.



Stephen Lias
The compositions of Stephen Lias have been heard widely both in the US and abroad in the last few months. His original score for Shakespeare’s The Tempest was featured in an SFASU production in November, and his jazz piece “Sassafras” was performed on the Pi Kappa Lamda faculty recital in February. His new work for string orchestra, “Pursued”, was selected as a finalist in the “Homage to Mozart” competition sponsored by the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin and premiered and broadcast in Moscow in January. This work was also performed in February by the Louisiana Sinfonietta in Baton Rouge, LA. “Five Characters from David Copperfield” was performed in February by Brian Utley at the North American Saxophone Alliance conference in Iowa City. “Sonata for Flute and Piano” is slated to be performed by Diane Boyd Schultz in March at the University of Alabama, as well as in August at the National Flute Association conference in Pittsburgh, PA.
