Background
CHARLES GAVIN, Associate Professor of Music, joined the faculty of
the School of Music in 1984. Prior to moving to Texas, he taught
at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and was principal horn with
the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra.
Students of Dr. Gavin have been noted for their success.
In 1984, one of his students won the MTNA National High School Brass
Artist Competition, and one of his SFA students was a national finalist
in the MTNA Collegiate Brass Competition. The SFA Brass, a student
Brass Quintet coached by Dr. Gavin, has been successful in chamber
music competitions (MTNA and the Keystone Brass Chamber Music Competition);
the group was featured in recital at the 1991 TMEA Convention.
In addition to teaching responsibilities at SFA, Dr.
Gavin maintains an active performing schedule. He is currently principal
horn with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra, a member of the Lake
Charles Symphony Orchestra, and performs with the Pineywoods Brass
Quintet. He was a soloist at the 23rd International Horn Symposium
and regularly performs at regional horn workshops.
Dr. Gavin serves as the Editor/Coordinator of the
International Horn Society Manuscript Press, and is past Texas Area
Coordinator for the IHS. Articles and reviews by Gavin have been published
in the Journal of the
National Association of Wind and Percussion Instructors.
