Background
BRIAN R. UTLEY is Assistant Professor of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University, where he teaches applied saxophone and courses in music theory. The Owensboro, Kentucky native received the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in saxophone performance, with a minor in music theory, from Louisiana State University. He also holds the M.M. from L.S.U. and the B.M. from Murray State University, both in saxophone performance. His primary saxophone teachers include Griffin Campbell and Scott Erickson.

Dr. Utley maintains a highly active performance schedule. He was recently a featured soloist with the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, performing John Williams’ Escapades for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra. Dr. Utley is a regular presenter at regional and national conferences of the North American Saxophone Alliance, including performances at the University of Iowa, the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, the University of North Texas, and Southeastern Louisiana University. He has also performed at international events such as the 2003 World Saxophone Congress and the 2006 Conference of the International Clarinet Association. He has presented guest artist recitals at colleges and universities in Kentucky, Texas, Alabama, and New Mexico. Dr. Utley also performs in a variety of chamber music settings, including collaborations with the Stone Fort Wind Quintet and numerous faculty members, and is a co-founder of the award-winning Red Stick Saxophone Quartet. He has recorded on the New Tertian Records and Magni Publications labels.

As an educator, Dr. Utley has presented master classes at universities in Illinois, New Mexico, Kentucky and Texas and has also given numerous saxophone clinics in public schools in the Houston, Dallas, and East Texas areas. His students have won and/or placed in the SFA Concerto Competition as well as the state and regional levels of the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Woodwind Competition. Many of his former students teach in public schools throughout Texas while others have gone on to pursue advanced degrees in music at notable institutions. Dr. Utley has also written pedagogical articles that have appeared in the Journal of the Texas Bandmasters Association.

Utley is a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, Texas Society for Music Theory, NACWPI, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Kappa Kappa Psi.
