Director of Orchestras

Conductor and educator, Gene Moon has led performances in the U.S. and abroad. As a proponent of higher education, he serves as director of orchestras at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX where the Orchestra of the Pines, the university flagship orchestra, regularly performs to sold-out audiences in captivating classical subscription concerts, opera productions, choral masterworks and pops programs. Moon also serves as chair for the prestigious Schmidbauer Young Artist Competition, an annual festival inviting the most talented high school musicians from around the world to compete for prize money and a guest solo performance with the Orchestra of the Pines.

An advocate of arts education, Moon is widely sought throughout the country and overseas for his passion with young artists and orchestras. As Music Director and Conductor of the East Texas Youth Orchestras, Moon arduously works to equip musicians of younger generations to become excellent classically-trained musicians. Equally skilled in the professional setting, maestro Moon begins the 2016-2017 season as the new Music Director and Conductor of the Longview Symphony Orchestra in Longview, TX. Moon was selected for his awareness of audience development, his commitment to community outreach and his propensity for stylish programming.

His devotion towards young musicians and charisma in sharing his passion for music is seen in his work throughout the state of Texas and beyond. He has led orchestras and performed as soloist and chamber musician worldwide. Dr. Moon is widely desired as guest conductor with engagements including the 2016 Sewanee Music Festival, the 2016 Arkansas All-State Orchestra, an international appearance with the University of Macau Orchestra, the 2014 and 2011 Louisiana All-State Orchestra, the 2012 North Central Honor Orchestra in Oklahoma City, a 2010 engagement conducting the Gang Nam Symphony Orchestra in Seoul, South Korea and the 2008 TPSMEA (Texas Private Schools) All-State Orchestra. In September of 2016, he will guest conduct the Orquesta Filarmónica de Medellín in Colombia.

Previous posts include the faculties at the University of Central Oklahoma, University of Oklahoma, the Mid-Del school district and as music director and conductor of the Oklahoma Youth Symphonies.

Moon studied conducting with critically-acclaimed conductors Jonathan Shames and John Jeter, and has worked in masterclass with world-renown conductor, Sergiu Comissiona. His piano studies have been guided by Jan Pokorny Steele, Lee Dai Wook, Dierdre O’Donohue, Ed Gates and noted Van Cliburn medalist, Valery Kuleshov. He earned degrees in music from the University of Central Oklahoma, New York University and the University of Oklahoma.
