The Opera Theatre program is dedicated to the principle
of providing students as many opportunities as possible to sing leading
roles. Operas produced in recent years include La Traviata, Carmen, The
Ballad of Baby Doe, Falstaff, Tales of Hoffman, The
Elixir of Love, Susannah, Così fan tutte, Albert
Herring, The Tender Land, Romeo and Juliet, Hansel
and Gretel, Street Scene, The
Magic Flute, Die
Fledermaus, La Périchole, and The Marriage of Figaro.
Interested students are also given the opportunity
to learn set construction, costuming, and lighting along with singing
in the productions. Performances are held in the modern 1,000-seat
Turner Auditorium and in other venues on- and off-campus. The opera
theatre produces a full-length major opera each spring and usually
several offerings each year during the popular SFA Summer Opera program.
