For
more than forty years, David Jones devoted his professional
life to that of an academic musician. He was an accomplished singer,
a tenor, and performed in many university, church, and regional productions
as soloist, conductor and producer.
Dr.
Jones established himself as an outstanding lecturer on Vocal Pedagogy.
He presented lectures at Western Illinois University, University
of North Texas, McLellan County College, Opera in the Ozarks, and
at San Jose, California. He was invited to read a paper at the third
Interdisciplinary Voice Conference honoring Van L. Lawrence in Fort
Worth in 1990. He gave a lecture and vocal demonstration at the National
Association of Teachers of Singing in Waco.
As
a voice teacher Dr. Jones placed numerous contestants in the finals
at the Texoma Regional NATS Auditions. Many of his students have
won district and regional Metropolitan Opera Auditions.
In
1992, Yvonne Gonzales, soprano, was one of the National
Metropolitan Opera Auditions winners and was awarded a three-year
apprentice contract with the company. In November 1993, when made
her Metropolitan debut as "Papagena" in Mozart's The
Magic Flute. She is now a regular with the company and is also
out singing in regional companies in Europe.
Bruce
Brown, baritone, is a member of the Vienna Stats Opera
Ensemble, and opened the 1996 season as "Marcello" in La
Boheme by Puccini. He sings or covers over one hundred roles
a year with the Vienna Stat Oper or the Vienna Volks Oper.
Jill
Grove, mezzo-soprano, is a new professional on the horizon
building an international singing career. She recently sang "Magdalene" in Die
Meistersinger at the Met which was recorded for later PBS
telecast. Critic Hugh Canning praised her "sensational" Ulrica
as "the best I've heard in any theater."
Dr.
Jones has numerous other former students singing in the professional
ranks at this time: Danny Bergen, tenor; John
Pickle, tenor; Michael Tally, tenor; Kay
Paschall, soprano; Terry Morris, baritone;
and Sarah Hibberd, soprano, to mention some of the
most successful. His daughter, Juli Wood, is a professional
singer and member of the voice faculty at the University of Texas
at San Antonio.
Dr.
Jones was honored in 1988 by being appointed Regents Professor for
Teaching at Stephen F. Austin State University. In 1987 he was elected
by the SFA Student Government as Teacher of the Year in Fine Arts.
In 1997 he was selected by his peers for the University Teacher Excellence
Award. In 1996 he was chosen Outstanding Alumni of College Music
at The University of North Texas at Denton.
Dr.
Jones founded the Opera Workshop, and with the able help of his colleagues,
he was the artistic director and stage director for over 30 productions
of major operas during the past 25 years. He also founded the Vocal
Pedagogy Program at SFA.
